Chancey and Digby

Once in a lifetime dogs, that is what Chancey and Digby were for us.  Chancey came first, as a small brown package of pure joy and love. She was ours the second we saw her.  The shelter let us take her home that very day and she was ours for the next 18 years.  From the very beginning she was our perfect little girl.

She never cried once and slept between our pillows the very first night. She would snuggle in one neck or the other and snuffle in our ears. That is the way we slept for the rest of her life.

Digby was the little brother Chancey wanted so badly. She got to live with us for 3 1/2 years and learned so much she needed someone to teach it all to. So we brought  Digby home and we became a whole and complete family.

Chancey proceeded to teach Digby the ways of our lives. He learned quickly and well. He always wanted to do everything she did and be loved as much as she was, and he did and he was. They were both loved beyond measure.

They were both just five weeks old when they came to us so we bonded quickly and oh, so very strongly.

The four of us had a full and joyous life together but it was the life the two of them had together that was so special.  They wanted to do everything together and they did. They got to travel the whole west half of the US and they got to live in many different places and they enjoyed all of it. They were the best,  just simply the very best.

We had special ways of giving one another loves and we had our own private "looks" that said everything.  We were a very happy family and had many wonderful years filled with nothing but new adventures and many hours of togetherness.  There is no way to explain the pure joy we had with them in our lives. They were always there for us whenever we needed them and they gave so easily.

But as in all things it had to come to an end and one that we knew we would not survive. Chancey was just over 18 years old and Digby was 14 1/2 years old and they both developed health problems that just could not be healed and with their age we didn't want to try any invasive surgeries. I think Chancey decided to stay around until Digby was ready and then they decided that the time was right and they would go together.  As in life, they would not be separated in death.  We gave them the gift of being together forever.  They would not have survived without one another. That of course was the hardest thing we have ever done and their loss was even more than a double loss.

They will be with us forever and nothing can ever take away the love, friendship, and closeness we had with them. They had a very full and loving life with us and we had the best of everything because of them.  Without them we would have had just an ordinary life.

So they are our once and forever dogs.
