Baxter

I would whine and beg for weeks, months, and years for a dog and finally my mom agreed to look, but not necessarily buy. We would visit the SPCA often and visit the pet mobile adoptions while buying our cat some food. We walked into Petsmart one day and there Baxter was, laying beside the SPCA volunteer worker. We spent some time petting him and talking to the volunteer. As we exited the pet store,my mother said even though it was a larger size dog than what we were looking for, she admired Baxter. I still didn't believe she would actually get a dog for me. We continued to visit the homeless dogs and although I don't remember the adoption process, I remember going to pick up my sister from daycare and walking Baxter. He was finally free to roam and breath the fresh air. My father came home to a surprise as he never agreed to a dog. However within days, Baxter won his heart over and although the adoption counselors said Baxter disliked men, Baxter and my dad became the best jogging partners. We adopted him at 2 years old and we had the pleasure to have him as part of the family for 8 more years. Our cat never got along with Baxter, but it became part of the norm. Baxter limping was the first sign of his illness. We went through every treatment possible but he just kept on getting more sick. He then stopped eating and drinking and that's when the vet and we decided it was time to part. We stayed with him to the end and got on our hands and knees to dig a peaceful grave looking out over the lake. Baxter brought happiness to our lives and would always cheer us up. We miss you Baxter! We rescued you and you rescued us.
